What are opioids?
Opioids are a large group of painkillers that work by interacting with opioid receptors in your cells.
When these drugs travel through your blood and attach to opioid receptors in the cells of your brain, the cells send out signals that make you feel less pain and more pleasure.
What makes opioid painkillers work so well is also what can make them dangerous.
Why are opioids dangerous?
At lower doses, opioids may make you feel sleepy, but at higher doses, they can slow your breathing and heart rate, which can cause death. And the pleasure you feel when you take this can make you want to keep feeling that way, which can lead to addiction.
Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and take your medicine exactly as prescribed to lower your risk of dangerous side effects. Make sure your doctor knows about all the other medicines and supplements you’re taking.
